Rwanda Kilimbi Honey – This exceptional coffee comes from the Kilimbi washing station, nestled in the Nyamasheke region of Rwanda, near Lake Kivu. The beans are cultivated at elevations ranging from 1,800 to 2,000 meters, where the cool mountain climate and fertile volcanic soils create ideal growing conditions. This lot is processed using the honey method, which lies between the washed and natural processes. After handpicking, the cherries are pulped to remove the outer skin while leaving a layer of mucilage intact. The beans are then carefully dried on raised African beds under the sun, allowing the sticky mucilage to impart its sweetness and complexity into the final cup. The result is a vibrant and juicy coffee with pronounced notes of yellow plum, hibiscus, red apple, and a delicate honey sweetness.
HISTORY:
The Kilimbi washing station is a pioneer in Rwanda’s specialty coffee scene. It was among the first to receive governmental approval for exporting honey and natural processed coffees—an important shift from the country’s traditional washed processing methods. Operated by the team at Muraho Trading Co., Kilimbi emphasizes quality, traceability, and innovation, working closely with local smallholder farmers. Their collaborative efforts ensure that each step—from cherry selection to drying—is handled with utmost care. This dedication not only enhances the coffee’s flavor but also supports the livelihoods of local communities. The Kilimbi project represents a modern chapter in Rwanda’s coffee heritage—where tradition meets progress, and the result is a cup as rich in character as it is in story.
